Retention windows matter here too. A theft discovered on a Tuesday might have happened over a long weekend, and internal issues often surface weeks later.

Cost over five years, not day one

Local storage is cheaper over time; cloud is cheaper on day one. That’s the whole trade.

Take a six-camera small business:

  • NVR route: recorder, cameras, drives and install upfront. Ongoing cost is one drive replacement somewhere around years three to five, plus power.
