BOOX Go Color 7 — 7″ Colour ePaper Reader

The colour e-reader for people who actually needed one: For years, colour e-readers were a promise, not a product. The screens were dim, the colours flat, and the price didn’t match what you got. Kaleido 3 changed that and the Go Color 7 is what a genuinely useful colour e-reader looks like in 2026.

Not everyone needs colour on an e-reader. If you read mostly novels, save the money and get the monochrome Go 7 it’s sharper, brighter, and cheaper. But if you read comics, manga, illustrated children’s books, cookbooks with photos, magazine PDFs, or textbooks with colour diagrams, this device removes the compromise. Colour images stay colour. Diagrams stay legible. And you still get the eye-comfort of e-ink for long text passages.

At 195 g and 6.4 mm thick, it holds like a slim paperback in one hand. This is the pocketable colour e-reader that finally exists.

The Kaleido 3 display the honest version

The Go Color 7 uses a 7-inch Kaleido 3 colour ePaper display with a Carta 1200 base panel. The resolution works differently from a normal tablet:

• Black-and-white content displays at 300 PPI — sharp, legible, indistinguishable from a monochrome reader
• Colour content displays at 150 PPI — softer than an LCD tablet or magazine print, but genuinely paper-like

Two things worth understanding before you buy:

1. Kaleido 3 colours are mellow, not vibrant. The technology works by placing a colour filter over a black-and-white e-ink panel. Colours look closer to a printed newspaper’s comic section than to an OLED screen. If you’re expecting iPad-level colour saturation, adjust that expectation. If you want colours that look like a well-printed book, this is exactly right.

2. The screen is slightly darker than monochrome e-ink. The colour filter reduces overall brightness of white areas. In dim rooms this is more noticeable which is why the front light matters (see below). In good ambient light, the difference is small.

The anti-glare Carta 1200 surface reduces reflections in bright environments, and the display supports BOOX’s exclusive refresh technology that reduces ghosting between page turns a common annoyance on older colour e-ink devices.

Adjustable front light with warm and cool tones

Unlike the original Go 10.3, the Go Color 7 has a built-in adjustable front light. Two things matter about it:

• Brightness range is wide enough for reading in complete darkness (very low minimum) to bright indoor use (comfortable maximum). The light illuminates the screen from the sides no direct backlight into your eyes.
• Warm/cool colour temperature adjustment swing the light between cool white for daytime and warm amber for evening reading. The amber setting produces less blue light, which is easier on the eyes before bed and less disruptive to sleep.

Combined, this means the Go Color 7 works in every lighting condition outdoors in bright sun, indoors under normal lights, in bed at midnight with the light on low warm.

Android with Google Play Store what you’re not locked out of

The Go Color 7 runs Android 12 (Gen 1) or Android 13 (Gen II) with full Google Play Store access. This is the biggest structural difference between BOOX and closed colour readers like the Kindle Colorsoft:

64 GB of internal storage (roughly 55 GB usable) is enough for tens of thousands of ebooks, hundreds of comics/manga volumes, and a large audiobook library. A microSD card slot expands this further — useful for full-quality manga collections or extensive PDF libraries where individual files can be large.

Audio, connectivity, and text-to-speech

The device includes a built-in speaker and microphone the speaker is fine for occasional audiobook use, but headphones over Bluetooth 5.0 or 5.1 give a much better experience for anything more than casual listening. Bluetooth pairs with wireless earbuds, headphones, and keyboards.

Text-to-speech reads books aloud through the built-in speaker or paired headphones. Useful for commutes, cooking, or resting your eyes on longer reading sessions. The TTS voice is functional rather than natural for premium audiobook narration, install Audible or a similar app from Google Play.

Wi-Fi supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Sync via BOOX Cloud (10 GB free), Google Drive, Dropbox, or any Android cloud app. USB-C handles charging, data transfer, and audio output.

On water resistance worth being clear: the Go Color 7 is water-repellent, not water-proof. Splashes from a coffee cup or light rain don’t damage it. Submerging it in a bath, dropping it in a swimming pool, or exposing it to sustained heavy rain absolutely will. Read this as a “durable enough for real life” rating rather than a Kindle Paperwhite–style IPX8 rating.

Battery how long you’ll actually go between charges

The 2,300 mAh battery lasts several days to a week for typical daily use (1–2 hours of reading per day), or 2–3 weeks for very light use. The colour display and front light both draw more power than a monochrome e-reader without a front light, so it doesn’t match the Kindle Paperwhite’s month-long claims — but it comfortably outlasts any LCD tablet.

USB-C fast charging brings it from empty to full in about 2 hours.
