For anyone specifying commercial-grade IP video today, three questions matter more than the megapixel count on the box: does it identify (not just detect); does the AI run locally without a cloud dependency; and does the enclosure survive real-world abuse. The UVC-G6-PRO-DOME-B answers yes to all three, at a price point where flagship-class cameras usually cost twice as much.

This is the black variant identical hardware, firmware, and specifications to the white UVC-G6-PRO-DOME-W. The colour choice is a design consideration, not a functional one. Pick black for exposed-steel ceilings, dark-clad architectural exteriors, industrial fit-outs, and installations where a bright white dome would be an eyesore.

Three hardware decisions that separate it from cheaper 4K cameras

Every marketing page claims 4K. What sets serious commercial cameras apart from budget consumer gear at the same nominal resolution is the underlying hardware. Three specific choices define this camera.

1. A 1/1.2″ 8 MP sensor. Roughly twice the surface area of a typical mid-market IP camera sensor (1/1.8″), and about four times the size of what sits in cheaper 4K units (1/2.7″). Sensor area determines per-pixel light gathering which is what actually keeps footage usable after sunset. In practice, this camera holds colour imagery further into dusk before switching to IR, produces less noise at the same shutter speed, and handles high-contrast scenes (a dark corner and a lit window in the same frame) without either area collapsing to unusable data.

2. A 2.36× true optical zoom, 5.9–13.8 mm. Not a digital crop with a marketing multiplier actual glass moving inside the lens assembly. Set once during install to frame the scene: 113.8° horizontal at 5.9 mm for full-doorway or driveway coverage, or 45.5° horizontal at 13.8 mm for a licence plate lane or a specific till point. No resolution loss at any zoom setting.

3. A Multi-TOPS on-device AI processor. Face recognition, licence plate reading, and people/vehicle/animal classification all run on the camera’s ARM Cortex-A53 chip. No cloud subscription. No inference latency. No video leaving your network unless you explicitly remote-view it through UniFi Protect. For sites with data-sovereignty requirements schools, government facilities, healthcare that’s often the deciding factor.

Choosing between the Dome and the Turret

The UVC-G6-PRO-DOME-B and its sibling the UVC-G6-PRO-TURRET-B share the same sensor, lens, AI engine, and IR range. The difference is the enclosure and audio configuration.

Rule of thumb: if the camera could be reached or hit by anyone who shouldn’t be near it car parks, entryways, playgrounds, factory floors specify the Dome for its IK10 rating. If the install is controlled and the operational value of two-way audio matters (front reception, entry intercom), specify the Turret.

  • Building perimeters and car park entries — 40 m adaptive IR combined with LPR gives you readable plates at range, with IK10 body strength to survive incidental impact from vehicles or debris
  • Retail loss prevention — enrol repeat-offender faces once, get a named alert every time they enter the frame; combine with wide-zoom for full aisle coverage
  • Warehouse loading bays — vehicle vs person classification means the system knows the difference between a forklift and a technician, and can trigger different rules for each
  • Corporate reception and executive floors — named alerts for VIP arrivals, employee-hours enforcement, after-hours access flagging
  • Educational campuses and public buildings — the vandal-proof body handles ball impacts and casual tampering that would destroy a lower-IK-rated camera
  • Petrol stations, drive-throughs, and vehicle service — plate capture at pump lanes and ordering points, day and night, without changing sensor spec

Deployment notes for installers

  1. PoE+ (802.3at) is mandatory — max 15 W draw when IR is active. Standard 802.3af PoE at 15.4 W total budget cannot reliably power the camera in cold weather with IR at full output. Spec accordingly.
  2. Use Cat 6 on longer runs. The gigabit RJ45 works fine on Cat 5e up to ~50 m, but Cat 6 gives cleaner signal integrity on longer horizontal or riser runs and future-proofs the cable plant.
  3. Set the varifocal zoom during commissioning. The 5.9–13.8 mm lens is manually adjusted at install — frame the scene once against real content in place, then leave it. UniFi Protect stores the framing for reference.
  4. Add a Weather Shield accessory for installs in direct sun or heavy driven rain. Extends the IK10 chassis lifetime, and reduces IR back-scatter from a wet dome (a common cause of glare artefacts in outdoor installs).
  5. The microSD slot is your outage buffer. Insert a high-endurance card at commissioning the camera falls back to edge recording during network outages and syncs to the primary NVR once the connection returns.
  6. UniFi Protect is required. The camera adopts into UniFi Protect running on a UniFi Cloud Gateway, UNVR, or a self-hosted Protect instance. There’s no ONVIF stream for third-party VMS platforms — this is a UniFi-ecosystem camera by design.
