Most people choose surveillance storage by picking a number that sounds generous. Then they either run out of retention three months in, or discover they have paid for terabytes they’ll never fill.
The arithmetic isn’t hard, and it’s worth doing before you spend anything.
What 12TB actually holds
Your retention comes down to four things: how many cameras, at what resolution, at what frame rate, and whether they record continuously or on motion.
A rough method:
- Find your per-camera bitrate in your NVR’s settings usually shown in Mbps.
- Multiply by camera count for total incoming bitrate.
- Convert to storage per day: Mbps × 10.8 ≈ GB per day.
- Divide 12,000GB by that figure for approximate days of retention.
As a worked example, twelve cameras at 4Mbps each is 48Mbps total, or roughly 518GB a day recording continuously. That’s around 23 days on 12TB. Switch to motion-triggered recording and you might triple it, depending on how busy the scene is.
Run your own numbers. If the answer lands short of what you need, buy larger now rather than adding a drive later.
Why the AI tier matters even at moderate capacity
A standard surveillance drive is built for one job: writing continuously. An AI system asks for two recording every stream and serving the read and write load that analytics generate against the same footage.

Confirm your NVR supports 12TB per bay. Most modern recorders do; older units often cap at 8TB or 10TB. It’s a quick check against the spec sheet and it’s the leading cause of large-drive returns.
