Not every system running analytics needs 16 or 20 terabytes. A twelve-camera site with detection running on the recorder needs the endurance of an AI-grade drive far more than it needs enterprise capacity and paying for storage you’ll never fill is a poor way to spend a security budget.

Why endurance matters more than capacity here

A standard surveillance drive is built to do one thing: write continuously. An AI system asks for two record every stream and serve the read and write load that analytics generate against the same footage.

That second job is what wears drives out early. A standard SkyHawk asked to do both is running well beyond its rating, and it usually shows around year two without much warning.

So if your system runs analytics, the tier matters even when the capacity doesn’t.

64 HD streams and 32 AI streams

ImagePerfect AI firmware is tuned for concurrent recording and analytics, with the goal of zero dropped frames when the system is busiest. Dropped frames aren’t cosmetic they are the gap in the footage where the thing you needed to see happened.

To be precise about roles: the analytics run on your recorder or server and its processing hardware. The drive’s job is sustaining that workload without becoming the bottleneck.

Check your recorder’s capacity limit

Most NVRs that support 10TB will take it without issue, and 10TB sits comfortably inside the limits of a much wider range of recorders than 16TB or 20TB does. SHM monitors drive condition continuously and flags developing problems early, so a failure becomes a scheduled replacement rather than an incident and a gap in your footage.

RAID RapidRebuild shortens volume rebuilds after a failure Seagate cites up to 3× faster than standard processes. During any rebuild the array runs degraded and exposed to a second failure, so a shorter window is genuine risk reduction.

At 10TB, rebuild times are also meaningfully shorter than at 16 or 20TB simply because there’s less data to reconstruct a quiet advantage of the smaller capacity in a multi-drive array.

Rescue Data Recovery Services

Three years of Seagate’s Rescue Data Recovery Services are included, covering recovery attempts after power failure, accidental deletion, physical damage or malware. Outcomes depend on the nature of the failure, so treat it as a complement to a backup strategy rather than a substitute.

How much footage is 10TB?

Depends on stream count, resolution, frame rate, codec and recording mode. For a mid-size system of 8–16 cameras at 1080p or 4MP with motion or event recording, 10TB typically gives weeks to months of retention. Continuous 4K across many channels will consume it considerably faster.
