The monitor for people who read code, not watch trailers
Most monitors optimise for one thing: brightness, contrast, refresh rate. All of those are trying to make video and games look better. If you stare at documents, code, terminals, spreadsheets, and PDFs all day, those optimisations don’t help you they contribute to the eye strain, the headaches at 4pm, and the reason you switch to your phone or tablet in the evening.
The BOOX Mira Pro (Color Version) is the opposite kind of screen. It uses E Ink a reflective technology that treats light the way paper does with a Kaleido 3 colour layer that adds enough colour for real-world productivity (syntax highlighting, dashboard reds and greens, PDF diagrams) without the aggressive saturation of an LCD. The result: a 25-inch canvas that behaves like a giant piece of paper on your desk, not a light source.
This isn’t a monitor for everyone. If you edit video, play games, or do colour-critical design work, an LCD or OLED is genuinely better. What the Kaleido 3 colour display actually looks like
The 25.3″ Kaleido 3 colour ePaper display runs at 3,200 × 1,800 resolution (145 PPI) with 4,096 colours and 16 grayscale levels. Two things worth understanding upfront:
Colours are soft, not vibrant. Kaleido works by placing a colour filter over a black-and-white E Ink panel. Reds look closer to a newspaper’s Sunday comics than to a magazine cover. Greens are muted. Blues sit softer than any LCD. That’s not a defect it’s the technology. For code syntax highlighting, dashboard colour-coding, and PDF diagrams, it’s ideal. For photo editing or brand-critical design work, it’s the wrong tool.
The screen is slightly dimmer than pure monochrome E Ink. The colour filter reduces overall brightness of white areas noticeable if you compare side-by-side with a monochrome Mira Pro, less noticeable when using either alone. The front light compensates.
At 145 PPI, text is sharp at typical desk viewing distances. Not retina-density like a modern MacBook screen, but well past the threshold where text feels “blocky” much closer to reading a printed page than a low-DPI monitor.
The front light an unusual feature for a monitor
Unlike backlit LCDs, E Ink displays don’t emit light on their own. The Mira Pro Color adds a dual-tone front light system (112 LEDs total) that illuminates the screen from the edges same approach as a Kindle or Kobo, scaled up. Two adjustable dimensions:
- Brightness — from very low (dim room, night reading) to bright enough for normal office lighting
- Colour temperature — from cool white for daytime work to warm amber for evening use (less blue light, easier on the eyes before bed)
Because the light illuminates the screen from the side rather than firing directly into your eyes, it produces no glare, no reflection, and no flicker. You can work into the night without the “screen-tired” feeling you get from any LCD.
The refresh speed reality read this before ordering
The most honest thing anyone can say about an E Ink monitor: it’s slower to refresh than an LCD. Scrolling isn’t buttery smooth. Fast animations show ghosting. Video playback works but doesn’t look like the source material.
The Mira Pro Color addresses this with BOOX Super Refresh (BSR) technology and four selectable display modes:
- Text mode — slowest refresh, cleanest text, no ghosting. Ideal for reading and code.
- Normal mode — balanced. General computing use, documents, web browsing.
- Video mode — fastest refresh but with visible ghosting. Acceptable for occasional video, not for editing.
- Slideshow mode — static content, longest interval between refreshes, longest-lasting screen state.
The mode is switched via a scroll wheel on the right side of the monitor. Most users set Text mode for coding/reading and Normal mode for everything else, then rarely touch it.

The included aluminium stand supports:
- Height adjustment — several inches of vertical range
- Tilt — angle the screen up or down
- Pivot — rotate between landscape and portrait orientation (portrait is genuinely useful for coding, reading, and document work)
For anyone who prefers a monitor arm or wall mount, the VESA 75 × 75 mm interface on the back accepts standard arms. Removing the stand takes a few minutes with a screwdriver.
Audio
Dual built-in speakers respectable for occasional video conferencing, background music, or system alerts. Not a replacement for proper desktop speakers or headphones for anything critical. Adequate for the use case (productivity, not media consumption).
